1. What is an AED?

The automated external defibrillator (AED) is a computerized medical device that checks a person’s heart rhythm, recognizes a rhythm that requires a shock and can advise the rescuer when a shock is needed. The AED uses voice prompts, lights and text messages to tell the rescuer the steps to take. 

2. Why did the fire truck respond when I needed an ambulance?

Most serious medical emergencies require more trained people than can be staffed on an ambulance to efficiently manage the situation. The fire truck usually arrives first to start a rapid assessment and to provide basic life support including airway management and cardiac defibrillation. 

The combination of an ambulance and a fire truck forms a coordinated team to perform life-saving care at traffic accidents, heart attacks or other major medical emergencies.

4. What is the best kind of fire extinguisher for my house?

A multipurpose fire extinguisher is best for the home. Look for the rating to be at least 2A:10BC on the label. This extinguisher can be used on any type of fire commonly found in the home. It will often be labeled A-B-C.

Cardiac arrest is a condition in which the heart no longer pumps blood to the brain or body. This is a sudden and unexpected event that can possibly be reversed if an electrical shock can be rapidly delivered to the heart.
