POLICE APPLICANT PROCESSING

The Richland Hills Police Department hires officers from an eligibility list established from individuals who successfully complete the City of Richland Hills Police Officer entry-level written examination. This list is valid for six (6) months or until it becomes exhausted. The Richland Hills Police Department will accept applications when an opening is advertised in the newspaper, otherwise the Department will accept job interest cards, which will be retained for one year. Applications and Job Interest Cards may be located at the Richland Hills Police Department, 6700 Baker Boulevard, Richland Hills, TX. 76118.

After successful completion of the written examination, applicants are processed in the following manner:

  • Preliminary Interview
  • Check F-5 status and obtain TCLEOSE Waiver. (Licensed Police Officers only)
  • Background Investigation
  • Oral Review Board
  • Polygraph
  • Interviw with Chief of Police
  • Conditional Offer of Employment
  • Medical Examination and Drug Screen
  • Psychological Examination
  • Employment Decision

A person who is an applicant for police officer shall:

  • Must be a United States Citizen
  • Be at least 21 years of age.
  • Meet one of the following minimum educational requirements:
    + High School Graduate
    + Have passed a General Education Development (GED) test indicating high school graduation level.
  • Meet all legal requirements for future licensing and certification as required by the Texas Commission on Law Enforcement Officers Standards and Education (TCLEOSE).
  • Possess a Texas Driver’s license without restriction, except "A".
  • Not have been convicted of an offense above the grade of a Class B Misdemeanor or a Class B Misdemeanor within the last ten years.
  • Not have been convicted of any family violence offense.
  • Have been discharged from any and all military service under honorable conditions; with excellent conduct.
  • Not have a license issued by the Texas Commission on Law Enforcement Officer Standards and Education previously revoked, denied by Final Order or have a voluntary surrender or license currently in effect.
  • Not have engaged in marijuana usage within thirty-six (36) months of application.
  • Not admit to or be found to have engaged in the use of or illegal manufacture or sale of any drug listed in the Texas Controlled Substance Act.
  • Not be on court-ordered community supervision or probation for any criminal offense above the grade of class C misdemeanor.
  • Not have been convicted of a misdemeanor offense of the grade of "Class A" within the last 12 months, "Class B" within the last 6 months of application, or the offense of Driving While Intoxicated within the last two (2) years.
  • Not have been convicted at any time of a felony offense as defined by Article 4413 (29aa), Sections 8A, Subsection (c), V.A.T.C.S.
  • Not be under indictment or pending trial for a Felony, Class A or Class B Misdemeanor.
  • Not ever executed at any time a confession to a felony offense, such confession being admissible as evidence against the applicant in any criminal proceeding in any state or federal court.

  • Not have been terminated by an employer because of conduct, which would violate the rules and regulations of the Richland Hills Police Department.

The Citizen Police Academy

The Citizen Police Academy (CPA) is a thirteen (13) week program that meets once a week on Thursday from 7:00 p.m. – 10:00 p.m. The program is designed to provide the public with a basic understanding of the criminal justice system and how the Richland Hills Police Department serves the community. The instruction is comprehensive and each week separate service areas of the department are covered using a series of lectures and hands-on activities.
