IDENTIFICATION:
POSITION TITLE: Director of Public Works

DEPARTMENT: Public Works

IMMEDIATE SUPERVISOR: City Manager

JOB SUMMARY:

Under direct supervision, employee provides administrative direction and develops policies, programs and procedures for the water, wastewater, street, drainage, sanitation, animal control and parks functions of the City. He/she shall interact with City departments, coordinate departmental activities with intergovernmental agencies, surrounding cities, and interfaces with the public on a daily basis, as well as perform related work as required.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:

Directs public works activities of water, wastewater, street maintenance, drainage, sanitation, animal control and parks maintenance; works closely with the city engineer regarding ongoing, projects; directs construction of projects; assists in the preparation of the annual department budget; monitors expenditures; ensures requirements of all public works contracts are met; oversees all construction, street sweeping, sanitation hauling and collection services provided to the City and corrects problems as they occur; hires, trains, and evaluates personnel; represents the City at meeting and conventions; negotiates terms of service agreements when authorized; exercises decision-making and leadership skills; practices effective customer service and pubic relations skills; attend Council meetings and prepares presentations as directed; demonstrate operational skills; and maintains effective supervisory relationship with subordinates.

OTHER JOB FUNCTIONS:

Ensures the City has sufficient supply of potable water for public consumption and fire protection; promotes employee education, training, and safety programs; may be required to inspect projects in the field under extreme environmental conditions. Masters of Public Administration or Bachelor's Degree in civil engineering or related field preferred; valid Texas Class C Driver's License required.

EXPERIENCE, TRAINING, KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS:

Experience with public infrastructure, including street maintenance, drainage systems maintenance, water/wastewater system maintenance, parks' maintenance, and other Public Works functions required; and five years' experience at the supervisory level.
