Summer Camp Counselor - Attendant

Position Summary
Under direct supervision of the Recreation Supervisor, Camp Counselors assist with all aspects of the summer and seasonal day camp. This position performs a variety of customer service duties, including working with children, talking with parents and maintaining a controlled, high energy camp environment. The Camp Counselors will primarily be responsible for interacting with children ages 5-12. Additionally, Camp Counselors will be assisting the management team with certain aspects of operations.

Essential Job Functions:
Effectively communicate with external campers and parents about all aspects of the camp, expectations, behavior concerns, and positive leadership acts. Communication is expected to sound professional and be modified to the audience, both adults and children. The Leaders will also know the policy and procedures and be able to follow and enforce them with consistency and tact.

Facilitates management of the camp, its games, activities, crafts, events, field trips both in The Link and at other venues. Camp Counselors will balance energetic leadership and empathetic discipline with campers.

Assists with maintaining a clean and safe recreation center facility and camp environment. While janitorial work is not the specific job duty of any particular employee, each member of the staff will be expected to assist in the cleanliness and safety of the Link and its internal and external amenities. Camp Councelors will do building walk-throughs to visually ensure the Link is in good order.

Helps management staff with room set-up and clean-up, including table and chairs stacking and unstacking. Also during events and rentals, leaders will continue communication with renter to ensure their expectations are met.

Leaders will help management staff with delegated duty in order to provide higher level service or quality of programs.

Other duties as assigned.

Education and Experience:
Work requires broad knowledge in a general professional field. Knowledge and maturity for this position is normally acquired through four years of high school or completion of a GED program. Preferred education would include two years of college. Preferred experience in person-to-person customer service, childcare or a related field.

Knowledge Skills and Abilities:

Camp Counselors must have positive personalities and like working in a team environment. The team has a variety of duties and therefore each member of the team helps assist others with their job tasks from time to time.

Counselors need to have the ability to continually be helpful to all manner of individuals, despite some interactions that include a disagreeable situation. Workers must remember that some contacts may involve stressful, negative interactions with the public requiring high levels of tact and the ability to respond to aggressive interpersonal interactions.

This position normally performs the job by following established standard operating procedures and/or policies. There is a choice of the appropriate procedure or policy to apply to duties.

Link employees dress, act and speak as educated professionals, regardless of position. The facility strives for high service levels

Special Requirements:
Must be able to work evenings, weekends and holidays; mobility within an office and field environment. Employees will be trained, but each employee must be able to keep up with the speed of service. Camp staff will work between 30 and 40 hours per week throughout the summer. Training will start in mid to late May. Camps will be offered through the middle of August.

Licenses and Certificates:
Valid driver’s license with good driving record and ability to maintain while employed. CPR/AED/First Aid certifications preferred; must get within 6 months of employment.

Work Environment:
Work performed in clean surroundings, does not usually subject employee to any disagreeable elements other than outside temperatures during summer/winter events; requires little physical effort in working with light, easy to handle materials (up to 20 lbs.) with occasional lifting of object weighing 50 lbs; walking, standing, reaching are part of the physical demands of this position. Customer service and camp positions are done mostly from a standing position.

Salary
$8.13 - $12.03/hr for the Attendants; Leader have a higher range
